What Is a Wheel Alignment?

Contrary to popular belief, wheel alignment has very little to do with your physical tire. Instead, wheel alignments involve meticulously adjusting these four suspension angles that dictate how your tires contact the road:

  • Toe angle: the precise direction your tires face relative to the vehicle centerline
  • Caster angle: the backward or forward slope between the upper and lower steering pivot points (such as the upper and lower control arms)
  • Camber angle: the vertical slant of the tires when viewed from the front of the vehicle
  • Thrust angle: the rear axle direction relative to the vehicle centerline and front axle

Understanding the Wheel Alignment Service

When you bring your vehicle in for wheel alignment, our ASE-certified mechanic in Broomfield or Erie will first take precise measurements and inspect suspension components.

We will look for signs of damage or excessive wear that may be contributing to the misalignment. If our mechanic spots a component in disrepair, we will explain all of your options and their implications.

However, if we determine no culprit impacts your wheel alignment, we will leverage advanced equipment to restore critical angles to manufacturer specifications.

The alignment system uses laser measurement to determine the exact wheel alignment and a precise readout of those angles. The mechanic can make adjustments to bring your alignment settings back within the manufacturer’s specifications based on that data.

How Can You Tell If Your Vehicle Needs Wheel Alignments?

As we mentioned earlier, the most obvious sign of needing wheel alignment is that your car will begin drifting to one side or the other as you drive.

However, it’s not the only sign. Additional signs include:

  • The steering wheel is no longer centered when wheels are straight
  • Vibration in the steering wheel when accelerating
  • Uneven or excessive wear on the tires

If your car is displaying any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with Fine Tuned Auto for a wheel alignment inspection. Failure to do so can cause further damage to your tires and suspension system and negatively impact your ability to maneuver.
